Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A miniature hollow-cast copper alloy votive visage of a male figure - perhaps Bacchus, god of wine, or an athlete or warrior - with a handsome face presenting naturalistic features framed by a wavy coiffure adorned by a grape vine/leaf wreath. While in ancient Greece, these were used to recognize the victors of athletic competitions; in ancient Rome, such wreaths were created to crown victorious commanders during wartime. Size: 1.5" H (3.8 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private collection of a judge, northern Germany, acquired in the 1980s acquired on the Amsterdam art market

A section from a somewhat larger piece with losses to peripheries as shown. The metal has developed a beautiful blue-green patina over the years.
