Description
"A History of the English Language", by Albert C. Baugh, published by Appleton - Century Company, New York and London, copyright 1935, first edition. First version of this classic work.
Hard boards, original publisher's cloth with gilt lettering on the front board and spine [some surface wear]; 5.3/4" x 8.3/4"; 509 pages including Index, the book was used as a college textbook in 1939: pencil writings on the endpapers, a few pencil marks inside, and pencil writing on the outer edge of the pages, good/+ condition.
Comprehensive and balanced, this classic exploration of the history of the English language combines internal linguistic history and external cultural history - from the Middle Ages to the present. Emphasis is on the political, social and cultural forces that affect language.
Albert Croll Baugh (1891-1981) was a professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, best known as the author of a textbook for History of the English language ("HEL" at U.S. universities), which was first published in 1935 and praised as "worthy to take a place with the other great histories of single languages". It was revised by Baugh for a second edition published in 1957 and it remains in print, edited by Thomas Cable.
