Newly translated out of the Original Tongues and with the former translations, diligently compared and revised by His Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be read in Churches. London: Printed by G.E. Eyre and W. Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty. The title page of the Old Testament is undated, the New Testament is dated MDCCCLXII [1862]. Provenance: The Bible was property of Charles F. Lee Jr., Virginia, with the golden imprint "C.F. Lee" on the front board; given by C.F.L. to Philippa L. Taliafin, Alexandria, Virginia, in February 1879.

Hard boards, original embossed blind tooled leather [some wear]; 4.1/2" x 7.1/2"; pencil gift inscription on the front endpaper; additional gift inscription on the back of the front ep and title page; inscription on back of last blank page dated '1892', unpaginated, a few page corner folds, a little soiling, some wear; gilt page edges; very good condition.

Before and after the Civil War, American publishers produced a sufficient number of Bibles: there was no need to import Bibles from England. During the Civil War (1861-1865), there was a shortage of Bibles in the South due to the Union blockade and limited availability of Southern presses. The New York-based American Bible Society opted to supply Bibles to both sides of the conflict, but distributing them to Confederate troops proved daunting. Despite facing obvious challenges, distributing Bibles during the Civil War included being intercepted as contraband by Union forces. The Bible Society attempted to smuggle Bibles from England, but only a small quantity made through the sea blockade imposed by the Union Navy. Tebbel writes: "The Bible shortage in the Confederate States of America is so severe that Union prisoners in Richmond, Va. were selling their copies for up to $15.00 each in order to buy food."
