Item Details
Description
A large and impressively hand carved wood antique 19th Century Kenya African Maasai marine figural group. Featuring six (6) human figurines and a large canoe boat form. Each figure carved in traditional primitive native Maasai southern Kenyan African tribal style. Features: one oarsman with individually carved oar forms; two female passengers carved in seated position, presented on a carved wood bench form; one standing male figure holding an individually carved tool; one male figure carved in seated position holding a machete knife, presented on a carved wood bench form; and one standing male figure carved to hold a now missing tool or weapon; all presented within a large oblong carved wood boat form, having carved recesses to fit the figurine feet and benches, and with a profusion of carved incised wildlife forms and geometric to exterior, and holding three detached head forms. No apparent signature. The boat measures 7" x 44" x 11". The figurines measure from 11" x 5" x 4" to 14" x 5" x 4". The previous owner was told that this boat was a gift from Chief Kivoi Mwendwa (born circa 1780s-1852) to Olonana ole Mbatian, popularly known as Lenana, (circa 1870-1911), a noted Maasai and Kenyan chief and Laibon (prophet).
