This painting by famous Hudson outsider artist Earl Swanigan (American, 1964-2019), depicts US President Barack Obama wearing only shoes and holding the head and neck of a rooster over his groin. This visual pun places the work somewhere between the more lurid Swanigan compositions, often featuring animals, and his well-known celebrity portraits, of which Obama was a favorite subject.

At 40x30 inches, this is one of the largest Swanigan portraits that has come up for auction. Dark background of artfully blended black and crimson, rendered with unusual care for the artist, creates a kind of aura around Obama and adds to the starkness of the piece, showing the celebrated man in all his human frailty.
