Description

(Japanese, 1924-2000)

Two woodblock prints: Poem 72-40 (sun-s), edition 76/153, signed "Haku Maki" lower right, artist's seal lower left, 15-7/8 x 11-5/8 in.; attributed to Haku Maki, Tea Bowl, edition 95/100, titled and signed illegibly lower right, 20-1/4 x 15-1/2 in.; framed, 18-7/8 x 14-1/2 in. and 25-5/8 x 19 in.

Note: Haku Maki was a Japanese artist associated with the sosaku-hanga movement of the 20th century. He studied briefly under the printmaker Onchi Koshiro following the end of WWII, and throughout his artistic career became known for his use of texture and for his striking compositions and arrangements of kanji.

Provenance: Uchida Art Co., Ltd., Kyoto/Tokyo, Japan, sold June 1976 (accompanied by copy of receipt); Private Collection

good overall; Poem 72-40 hinged in on mat, some previous tape remnants and toning at top edge verso; Tea Bowl not examined out of frame; frames with light wear and abrasions
