Description
Ancient Egypt, new Kingdom, 19th to 20th Dynasty, ca. 1292 to 1070 BCE. A tan-glazed steatite scarab with a protruding clypeus, lateral plates, a rounded thorax, and delineated elytra, all above sinuous legs. Beneath the insect are incised hieroglyphs intended as well wishes for a happy new year. Scarabs were protective talismans and had magical powers to ward off evil as the ancients were extremely superstitious. Size: 0.61" L x 0.44" W x 0.31" H (1.5 cm x 1.1 cm x 0.8 cm)
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, acquired from Leonard Auction on January 23, 2022, Sale 285, lot 444; ex K. Hammond collection, South Carolina, USA, acquired in the 1970s

Light abrasions and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to hieroglyphs beneath body.
