Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture to Medieval period, ca. 8th to 13th century CE. A forged-iron axe head bearing a thick butt, an ovoid socketing shaft, a gently tapered neck, and a lengthy vertical blade with a pronounced curve along the underside. Axes like this had primarily utilitarian purposes such as chopping wood or shaping mud bricks; however, they could quickly be transformed into an effective battle weapon in the right hands.
