Catalog Note:
In the early 1960s, a Swiss publisher commissioned Dalí to create a collection of prints that celebrated five real and imagined figures who shaped the cultural imagination of Spain. The collection was entitled The Five Spanish Immortals. It featured Cervantes, Europe's first great novelist and his beloved character, the aging knight errant, Don Quixote. Respects were also paid to the following: El Cid, the fabled Spanish hero; El Greco, Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance; and Velazquez, Spanish painter and leading artist in the court of King Phillip IV of Spain and Portugal.
