Description
Josef Albers
Large bowl with wooden handles. 1920s. Thick-walled colorless glass, two mounted handles made of dark precious wood. Conical glass wall with two drilled holes through which the angular handles are fastened with screws in Rampa sockets, cylindrical screw caps are chrome-plated. H. 14 cm / D. 30.8 cm, H. 12.8 cm / D. 23 cm (without handles). The bowl offered here corresponds to two thick-walled glass bowls with wooden handles that are in the Bauhaus Collection in Dessau. It is almost identical in size to the taller of the two Dessau specimens. One of the Dessau bowls was acquired in the Leipzig gallery on Sachsenplatz. This vessel is shown in the BAUHAUS 7 catalog of the Galerie am Sachsenplatz, Leipzig, 1991, page 20, and is described there as a side bowl, designed by Josef Albers in 1924/25. However, the processing of the bowl offered here is more careful, and it can therefore be assumed that the two Dessau bowls are predecessors. A few years ago, the vessels of the Albers Foundation Bethany/USA were presented, from which an exchange of ideas developed on the way industrial glass was used and the combination of glass and wood in the work of Josef Albers and on his unconventional and innovative ideas in the processing of materials has been referenced.
