Description
A genuine Confederate conversion of a Second Model Virginia Manufactory Musket with lock plate dated 1818 with Richmond in an arc at rear of hammer. Musket shows typical placement of barrel band springs forward of the lower and middle bands and remains of the brass flashpan qualifying it as the second variation of the second model, produced 1818 to 1821, the end of production, with 5,292 produced in 1818. The configuration of the bolster indicates the conversion was done by S.C. Robinson of Richmond. Author Giles Cromwell states that all confederate conversions were likely done by four Richmond firms including S.C. Robinson, Francis Perpignon, The Union Manufacturing Company, and T.J. Adams.
Again citing Cromwell… S.C. Robinson effected the greatest number of musket alterations for Virginia. From July, 1861, through December, 1862,at least 14,000 muskets were altered by Robinson at a cost of approximately $3.50 each. Identification of Robinson's work includes use of a two faceted bolster which has a flat bottom M1842 musket style, and the bolster insets into the top edge of the lock plate. On those which originally had brass pans, a sliver of the brass pan is often retained beneath the flat bottom of the bolster. Exactly what we see on this musket.
This is a good solid Johnny Reb musket showing honest age. No markings on barrel bands. Letter S stamped into the escutcheon side plate.
Materials, Packing, and Shipping is $65.00. Insurance is $1.50 per hundred, and $7.00 FOR UPS SIGNATURE SERVICE. We ship only inside the USA.
