Description
[Andy Warhol] Two archives relating to a book on Warhol and an exhibition on his early work, both 1971.
A group of typescripts, carbon copies and galleys relating to John Wilcox's 1971 book The Auto-Biography & Sex Life of Andy Warhol; and a group of copy prints, transparencies, reproductions, mock ups, exhibition posters, the finished gallery book, an opening night ticket stamped "Happy Andy Warhol Day" and other materials relating to the 1971 exhibition Andy Warhol: His Early Works 1947-1959 at the Gotham Book Mart in New York City in 1971. The exhibition poster is 18 x 12 inches; the balance of items smaller. Wear from handling and use in publication, folds, stains from paperclips, etc..
Together, these two archives offer good insight into the intense and growing interest in Warhol at this still early point in his career. The materials here relating to John Wilcox's 1971 book The Auto-Biography & Sex Life of Andy Warhol includes a rejection letter from publishers Charles Scribner's Sons and numerous typescripts and galleys of the many of the interviews that formed the book. In the interviews, members of Warhol's inner circle were asked how they first met him, and present here are various drafts and galleys of the interviews by Gerard Malanga; Charles Henri Ford; Donald Tavel; Lou Reed; Eleanor Ward; Sam Green; and Brigid Berlin (named here as Brigid Polk for her willingness to "poke" amphetamine into the bottoms of willing takers).
The items relating to the Gotham Book Mart exhibition Andy Warhol: His Early Works 1947-1959 provides many copy prints depicting Warhol has a young man, reproductions of early works such as shoe designs for Bonwit Teller and some of the 25 cats named Sam. The gallery book is not a minor production offering an early retrospective of Warhol's early work.
