Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. This is a lovely pendant in the form of an orca (killer whale) hand-carved from a marine mammal bone- possibly whale- to imbue power into the object. The dorsal fin is pierced for suspension and the eye, pectoral fin, and tail are inlaid with nacre shell. Orcas in Tlingit and Haida culture are believed to be ancestors and can assume the shape of humans and can walk on the land in disguise, and when humans drown, they transform into these whales. Such a pendant would not only show clan affiliation but would offer protection, the orca is also believed to protect travelers and guide them home when needed. Size: 3" L x 2.25" W (7.6 cm x 5.7 cm)
