Description
Northwestern Europe, Scotland, Edinburgh, ca. late 19th century CE. This is a whimsical brass and gold washed picture frame that is shaped as an elegant door entryway- the hinged double doors outfitted with lion head ring pulls that open to reveal 3 individual ovoid slots for pictures. The verso has an articulating inverted V shaped easel leg support for displaying the frame on a tabletop, engraved "P. WESTREN / 103 PRINCES ST / EDINBURGH." The frame is styled after a dramatic Gothic or Romanesque cathedral entryway: the doors framed by jamb columns incised with interlacing and scrolling foliate and rosette forms. The curving archivolt similarly incised and adorned with thistle shaped crockets. Peter Westren is a known Manufacturer of Historical Scottish Jewelry, the firm moved to 103 Princes Street after 1860, a prime spot in the shopping district of Edinburgh to sell their jewelry and novelty items such as this frame. Size: 8" L x 1" W x 10" H (20.3 cm x 2.5 cm x 25.4 cm)
