Description
March, 1861 letter written by Louisiana businessman Marshall J. Smith in reference to a business matter. Smith would organize and command as Colonel the 24th Louisiana Infantry “Crescent Regiment” at the start of the Civil War, receiving acclaim for his leadership at the Battle of Shiloh. This letter is written on interesting stationary: a New Orleans market report newspaper that cleverly included a page of lined paper for notes and letter writing. This was likely done as a way to advertise the paper.
