Description
Framed albumen photograph of veterans who served in the 57th Georgia, company “A,” during a reunion held in Thomasville, Georgia. They hold the torn battle flag they fought under during the Civil War. A period newspaper describes the occasion, which reads in part: The "Dixie Boys," company A, Georgia volunteers, held a reunion in this city yesterday, the first since they surrendered with Johnston in 1865. The company left Thomasville on October 8th 1861 and fought throughout the war in many bloody battles. There were 119 men in the company, during the four years fighting, many of them never returned to their home... The old banner of the company inscribed "D.B" and "Victory or Death" floated above the little band that carried it away 34 years ago fresh and clean. It is now tattered and torn and pierced by hundreds of bullets, torn by shells and worn to shreds. It was borne in the last charge by Underwood who fell in that battle, his son ER Underwood owns it now. At that time it was the regimental flag. The flag was made by Mrs. James L Seward, now an aged lady still living in this city. The old flag torn and shot to pieces as it was, but never captured, was pathetic in its silence eloquence. Strong men almost wept as they gazed upon its riven folds, and thought of those who poured out their lifeblood to maintain it unsullied.” Measures ~15 x ~13 inches framed.
