Description
c. 1858 Half plate ambrotype featuring eight members of a white southern family (and dog) with a young African American woman, likely their slave, standing behind them.
Almost completely hidden, the enslaved woman's subordinate position is keenly felt in the composition of this family portrait. Her inclusion is a sobering reminder, and rare visual evidence, of life in the antebellum south.
The image is housed in a complete leatherette case.
[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Abolitionist, Abolition, Slave, Slavery, Emancipation Proclamation, Abraham Lincoln] [19th Century Photography, Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Tintype, CDV, carte-de-visite, albumen, cabinet card] [Abraham Lincoln]
