Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely decorative lead tile or panel, featuring a relief image of a rearing pegasus. The animal's body and wings are powerfully depicted. Pegasus is one of the most popular and instantly recognizable figures in Greco-Roman mythology - a magnificent winged horse who aided the hero Bellerophon as he fought against the chimera. This panel was probably displayed alongside others, perhaps recreating that story. Letters, including A and M, are visible around the animal's body. Size: 2.25" W x 2.3" H (5.7 cm x 5.8 cm)
