Description
Upper Silurian Period, c.420 million years B.P. A large fossiliferous slab showing two clear crinoid branches with distinct stalks, leading to two individual feeding heads. 3.8 kg, 28 cm (11 in.) From the Erfoud Region, Morocco, North Africa. Private Shropshire, UK, collection. Crinoids are filter feeding sea animals, which attach themselves to the bottom of the ocean with a stalk. They are echinoderms related to starfish, sea urchins, and brittle stars. Today they are referred to as ‘Sea Lilies’, and are virtually identical to their fossil relatives, making them living fossils. [No Reserve]
