Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $200**

Northern Greece, Thrace, ca. 9th to 7th century BCE. A wonderful ensemble of 6 fragments of bronze spectacle - or double spiral - fibulae: 2 whole and 4 halves. While the halves each present as projecting bronze coils, the 2 whole fibulae display the traditional form of a single elongated thick wire, that was meticulously twisted in a rotational fashion to create this iconic, double spiral pattern. The 4 halves each display the remains of their pin catch, which is formed when the bronze coil travels inward and creates a loop that either acts as the catch or the pin for the fibula. Over the ages a gorgeous green patina has formed on the surface of these elegant fibulae. Fibulae were used for pinning cloaks and clothing at the shoulder. Ornate ones, such as these, adorned the wealthy and elite and were often buried with their owners to accompany them in the afterlife. Size of largest: 4.3" L x 2" W x 1.3" H (10.9 cm x 5.1 cm x 3.3 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
