Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Finely painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on gesso atop wood, a beautiful icon depicting one of the holiest scenes in Christianity, the Annunciation, presenting the joy of the announcement of the coming of Christ. The Archangel Gabriel alighting before the Virgin Mary while presenting her with a lily as he eagerly informs her that she will be delivering the Christ Child. Mary, seated on the right in a golden armchair, presses her right hand to her heart in disbelief. Between them is a table with the an open gospel upon it and the Holy Ghost in the form of a white dove above. The scene is framed by columnated architecture on the left and gold trimmed emerald green curtains draped on the right. At the top center is God the Father donning a triangular halo blessing the scene. Below is a decorative gold-bordered cartouche, the central section presenting a rendering of an ornate cathedral with cross-topped spires. The year "1882" is written in gold leaf in the left section. A beautiful composition rendered in jewel tone hues and with gold leaf delineated halos as well as other details such as Mary's chair, the negative space between the columns, the cartouche outlines, and the border surrounding the entire composition. This gold symbolic of Holy Light. Size: 12.5" L x 9.25" W (31.8 cm x 23.5 cm)
