Thomas Sully & Family
American, 1783-1872
Archive of Studies In Oil and Watercolor, Drawings, Letters, and Ephemera
Largest: 10 1/2 x 12 1/4 inches. Among the art works are approximately 8 studies in oil, 4 in watercolor, 4 ink drawings, 5 pencil drawings, and 2 prints. Most of the objects in the archive have been passed by descent in the Sully family but a few of the works were purchased at auction. The letters and ephemeral material in this include two complete and four partial autograph letters (all but one signed) by Thomas Sully to family members (mainly to his son Alfred Sully, but two apparently to Sophy Tully), one of especial interest dated January 9th 1843, regarding financial losses he has sustained. Light wear, tears; a letter to Alfred Sully from a friend. Usual folds; Edward Biddle and Mantle Fielding The Life and Works of Thomas Sully (1783-1872). Philadelphia, 1921. A Sully family copy. Title and limitation leaves detached, worn; a collection of newspaper cuttings, mostly on Sully family matters, collected by Albert W. Sully; and approximately 12 leaves taken from a scrapbook of clippings likely kept by Thomas Sully Worn, toned, the clippings mounted on a repurposed account book or similar.
