Item Details
Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, likely Oregon, Columbia River Region, Chinookan peoples, ca. 9th to 19th century CE. This a large piece of obsidian hand knapped into a lengthy spear head with a stem for hafting, beside the impressive size the obsidian has a light silver sheen. The basal area is side notched to create the stem which has a pair of petite barbs projecting horizontally from the sides that could help secure the blade to pole with sinew or leather cords. A tool from such a stone was not only beautiful but incredibly sharp. Obsidian flakes to a razor sharp and glassy surface which was invaluable to hunters as they were more effective at cutting than other stones. A blade of this size may have been a ceremonial or prestige item rather than utilitarian. Size: 8.375" L x 1.65" W (21.3 cm x 4.2 cm)

The silvery sheen across the surface that is almost imperceptible in photos, but when compared to other obsidian pieces that are purely jet black, there is clearly some iridescent to this spear. This silvery quality is a result of water vapor trapped in the lava as it solidifies; the gas bubbles stretch outwards along the flow layers and as the lava cools the bubbles become permanent parts of the matrix, reflecting light which produces this sheen!
