Description
The jar is stamped "Patton & Co / Toronto C.W.". John and James Patton (father & son), importers of china, glass and earthenware, first appear in Bowsell's 1850-51 Toronto Directory as operating their business from the Wellington building located at 49 King St. East, Toronto (between present day Church and Toronto Streets). By 1862, the business had expanded to include many additional offerings and as such, had relocated to larger premises at 64 King St. East (see advertisement in the photo gallery from Mitchell's 1862-63 Directory). The business prospered at the new location for several more years until the partnership was dissolved when James left the company to pursue other business interests in Montréal. From the Alan Emerson Collection.. A couple of hairline cracks are evident on the front of the jar with one of them extending into the base. A tiny chip exists just inside the mouth of the jar and a couple more are evident on the lid. A small piece of the lid's knob is missing. Stoneware. Canadian. c1860. 6" H x 4.5" Diameter. CODE-POT
