Description
This miniature red earthenware jar has been attributed to Daniel Orth; a potter who was active during the last half of the 19th century in the village of Campden, Ontario. Campden, originally known as Moyer's Corners when it was first settled by Mennonites, is located southwest of Vineland (between Vineland and Beamsville) in the Niagara Peninsula. Daniel, known as the “potter of Campden", operated the pottery from 1851 until shortly before his death in May of 1902. The 1890-91 census indicates that the "Orth pottery is the only remaining one still in business in the Niagara area". This jar, very much in his style featuring a reddish orange body and mottled yellow glaze, was apparently a sample of Daniel's work and remained with the Orth family. From the H. Jarvis collection. Mr. Jarvis purchased the jar directly from the Orth Family. The family, according to Mr. Jarvis, stated that this was made by Daniel as a sample of his work. The jar exhibits a number of glaze flakes, some of which can be attributed to the firing process in the kiln. The lug handles are complete and there isn't any evidence of restoration on the jar. Overall, a very nice miniature. Daniel Orth. Red earthenware. Canadian. c1870. 4" H x 3.5" Diameter. CODE-POT
