Item Details
Description
The Union Act of 1840, which took effect in February 1841, united Lower and Upper Canada to form the Province of Canada. Lower Canada was renamed Canada East (Québec) while Upper Canada became Canada West (Ontario). On Saturday, October 2, 1841, the Canada Gazette made its debut becoming the official newspaper of this new government. The gazette was published weekly and, among other news of local interest, it included information such as selected treaties of the British Government, notices of Royal Assent, proclamations and regulations, financial statements of chartered banks, appointments of notaries and justices of the peace and admissions to the Law Society of Upper Canada. This lot consists of a collection of fifty-nine (59) complete Canada Gazettes (of which many are only 4 to 6 pages in length), as well as a large quantity of loose pages. The majority of these gazettes are from the year 1843, the third year of publication, but there are also several from 1844 as well as some much earlier sheets from 1835 published by the "Upper Canada Gazette". The tin storage box for these historical documents, designed to accommodate three years worth of issues, is marked "Francis Legh Walsh of Charlotteville, Upper Canada" followed by the years "1853, 1854, 1855". One of the earliest settlements in Upper Canada, Charlotteville was settled in 1796 by the Walsh and McColl families and is a small community located southeast of Tillsonburg and west of Port Dover, Ontario. The gazettes exhibit varying degrees of toning, soiling and staining. Creases, slight tears and minor material losses are evident in a number of the issues as well. Given the age and nature of the paper used to produce this early material, overall, they've survived quite well. The exterior of the storage box exhibits areas of light to moderate surface loss, soiling and stains. Several patches of light surface rust can be seen in the interior. Paper. Canadian. 1835-1844. 3.5" H x 16" W x 10" D. CODE-CAN
