Description
Auguste Edouart (French, active in USA, 1789-1861). Two folkart silhouettes of children signed Aug Edouart. The first depicting a boy and his jumping dog marked "12 Nov. 1861 / Boston Mass.", very good condition; and the second of a young boy and girl, marked "Saratoga / 17 Aug 1863" - some staining and darkening of paper but overall good condition. Both mounted in newer birdseye maple frames that measure 6 1/2" x 8 1/4". See photo for other pen and ink inscription on images and for the cards applied to reverse that indicates these silhouettes were exhibited by Authur S. Vernay in NY City in 1913. Note - Mr. Vernay was a world renowned English-born antiques dealer, hunting enthusiast, naturalist and philanthropist, 1877-1960. According to Wikipedia - "He sponsored and took part in expeditions across the world to collect biological specimens and cultural artifacts on behalf of the American Museum of Natural History. The Vernay-Faunthorpe Hall of South Asian mammals in the AMNH is named after him.". Provenance: From the Doris and Jerry Soldner collection, Lake Carmel NY (formally of Kingston NY).
