An antique Japanese enameled vase. The vase was made by the renowned Ando workshop, founded in Nagoya, Japan by craftsman Ando Jubei, 1876 to 1956, in 1881. The artisan who decorated this large Ando vase used bassetaille and cloisonne techniques. The vase has a high shouldered ovoid form which has been finished in a ruby red color known as pigeon blood or akasuke. The front of the vase features a colorful profusion of cloisonne flowers, including two young sprouts of bamboo symbolizing a recently celebrated wedding. The foot and lip of the vase are rimmed in nickel silver bands. Basse taille is an enamelling technique in which the artist creates a low relief pattern in metal, usually silver or gold, by engraving or chasing. Ando Jubei was a Japanese cloisonne artist from Nagoya. Along with Hayashi Kodenji, he dominated Nagoyas enameling industry in the late Meiji era. Ando Jubei is considered one of three artists whose technical innovations led to the golden age of Japanese cloisonne in the late 19th century.
