Description
Anthonius VAN DYCK (1599-1641)
Lady Mary Newton, later Lady Jermyn
Oil on canvas, signed lower left, verso with an old label from an English auction with the inscription "Consign No. ...Allenby...Lot No.55"
109.5 x 86.5cm
The attribution to the artist is based on a certificate by van Dyck expert Justus Müller Hofstede dated March 21, 2006.
Hofstede thought he recognized Lady Belhaven in the portrait. However, it can be stated that there are several ladies in Van Dyck's oeuvre who look similar, such as Lady Anne Cavendish, Lady Rich, but only Lady Mary Newton wears the same jewelry. Especially the brooch is comparable.
Provenance: Lady Clover, Freudenberg Castle, Canton Zug, Switzerland
