The Jacquard Puppets 'Toys', The Jacquard Puppets 'Toys', comprising: nine soldier skittles in two groups, two musician soldiers, general on horseback, two Dutch dolls, two smaller figures and another, soldiers 22cm high mounted musicians 30cm high mounted general 28cm high Dutch dolls 31cm high (10) The two Dutch dolls, sometimes known as Deoch and Doris, were popular in the 1930s. They were bought by children who often made their clothing out of scraps. Their 'wooden' performance was greatly improved by John giving them sophisticated articulation and personality. A reviewer from the BPT Guild wrote of a show in April 1939, 'Next were the Dutch dolls, BW nudged me and whispered 'one of the most delightful things in puppetry' and I agree with him...'. The toys featured in one of Jan Bussell's Christmas productions for the BBC in 1947, although it is not known which one.
