Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez regions (Fes), ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A beautiful Fassi style porcelain bowl with a ring foot and thick walls. The interior and exterior are painted with cobalt hues and geometric motifs on a white ground that wonderfully highlights the lovely blue color scheme. The interior has an intricate arrangement of quatrefoil petaloid shapes, stippling, and linear motifs, the patterning and color scheme are influenced by Islamic art and Chinese porcelain! Fez is renowned for its handmade and glazed pottery, especially the blue and white style that developed in the mid to late 19th century inspired by Chinese porcelain that was becoming more widely available at the time; these became known as Fassi, that translates to "from Fez." The foot is pierced for suspension, doubling as both a decorative piece and dining ware. Size: 13.5" Diameter x 3.25" H (34.3 cm x 8.3 cm)
