Item Details
Description
North America, United States, ca. 19th century CE. A group of 3 antique glass bottles of a semitransparent aquamarine hue. The first is a large pear shape that has raised double spirals or violin scrolls under a pair of stars on both sides, and a rough pontil mark on base- with a black mark from the iron rod. The next is a mold blown flask with an eagle, banner and arrows over raised oval, and smooth slightly indented base, hinged line from the mold on shoulders and base. The last flask is a historic flask commemorating the Mexican-American War, with a bust of General and President Zachary Taylor in profile with “ROUGH & READY” under his portrait, and the reverse has "MAJOR RINGGOLD" with Ringgold’s portrait bust. Major Samuel Ringgold was known for his military innovations, including a specialized riding saddle and artillery techniques and he was allegedly the first officer to die in the Mexican-American War. The base contains a rough pontil mark, and this may have been from the Baltimore Glass Works. Size (violin scroll flask): 6" W x 8.75" H (15.2 cm x 22.2 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
