Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is an adorable money box or piggy bank hand carved from a coconut shell, with openwork sides creating a floral and woman motif. The top of the pig has a slit for depositing coins, and the front head of the pig has an open mouth, relief ears, and drilled eyes. Encircling his back are skirted women and flowering tropical plants, the openwork allowing us to see the coin inside. Size: 3.5" L x 3" W (8.9 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired prior to 2000

Stable fissures radiating from slit opening and losses to openwork along this break line. Coin included is modern to demonstrate how the bank works and not easily removable. Dark patina throughout.
