Description
Carved wood and painted dance mask with energetic face and attached long grass collar. Masks are worn by male members of the Nyau society only. The masquerader is considered to embody the spirit of a deceased ancestors, and therefore has immunity for any acts while masked. They are danced at initiation ceremonies, the coronation of a new chief, and funerals. The mask itself shows wear and weathering , old insect damage and measures 10 x 7 inches ( not counting the long grass collar and beard) Chewa peoples, Malawi, Africa. Provenance: Ex.
