Description
Antique Codd Neck Bottle - 1890s This antique bottle is of the Codd neck design, invented by Hiram Codd in the 1870s as a better way to store and ship carbonated drinks. A glass marble sits just inside the opening, and seals againt it while held in place by the pressure of the carbonated drink. It is then opened by pressing a plastic tab with enough pressure to break the seal and release the marble. The design is still used in Japanese Ramune sodas today. This example is from the John Grundy company in Stockport, England during the Victorian era, and originally held ginger beer when it was sold. Approximate size: 2.5" x 2.5" x 7.5" Approximate weight: 0.5 lbs
