Item Details
Description
FRANCE,CIRCA 1844
A fine and rare Sevres porcelain plate from the initial order of the "Service Ordinaire de Fontainebleau" ordered by King Louis Philippe (1773-1850) for the Chateau de Fontainbleau. The plate is decorated with a central roundel with pierced spearheads and scrolled tendrils within a Greek key decorated well. The rim of the plate is intricately decorated with an arabesque foliate and tendril design with diamond medallions of the royal cipher and ovoid medallions with royal emblems separated by naturalistic enameled hunting dogs with prey, deer, and eagle with serpent. The underside of the plate exhibits two molded bands with incised inscription between them, the blue Sevres Louis Philippe monogram mark within the smallest center molded band dated "1844", and the iron red "Chateau de F. Bleau" mark with stylized "de". The plate was designed by Jean-Charles François Leloy (1816-1844). A rare museum quality example, not a common Limoges or later copy.
Porcelain,Measures 9 1/2" diameter.

From a Southern, Massachusetts estate. A similar example with exact markings to base and incised scripture can be found within the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Accession Number: 37.175.1). The only exception, this plate is dated 1844 whereas the example in the MET is dated 1847.
