Description
Fine condition, signed and dated lower right 1951. Sight size: 10" x 8". Gerald Nailor, Navajo artist, was born in 1917 in Pinedale, New Mexico. From the time of his marriage to a Picuris Indian woman until his death in 1952, he lived in Picuris Pueblo, New Mexico. Mr. Nailor exhibited at the Museum of New Mexico, the Denver Art Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Philbrook Institute, and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial. He illustrated a number of books as well. A renowned Navajo painter whose murals decorate the Navajo Council Chambers in Window Rock, Arizona and the Department of the Interior Building in Washington, DC. Gerald attended the Santa Fe Indian School from 1954-1958, where he studied Native American painting under excellent instruction. His work was a blue ribbon recipient at the Eight Northern Pueblos Art Show at San Ildefonso Pueblo in 1982. He completed a year of study under the Swedish muralist Olaf Nordemark. While the greater part of his work stemmed from his vivid imagination and knowledge of Navajo myth, his interest in design and color of wildlife is also a notable source of picture material.
