Description
second half 19th century, 58 x 97 cm, North West Persia, Kurdistan
Mafrash is the name used to describe the large bags with four decorated sides and a kilim bottom which served to store objects (often bedding) in homes or tents, or were employed as cargo cases by nomads during their migrations. They would then hang from the flanks of the camels, usually in pairs. The wool, knotting structure, palette and ornamentation of the two borders are certain indications that this mafrash was made in the Bijar area. The dark blue fields are adorned with either three or two large rectangular güls reminiscent of Shahsavan weavings. We are not aware of any comparative examples. – Very good condition.
