Description
A massive example of a rare weapon typically found in the Transcaucasus and northern Iran, its design suggests it was used in place of the saber, probably for close fighting by infantrymen. The large, kindjal-type horn grip with silver mounts. The broad blade similar in cross-section to Georgian saber blades, will well-wrought, etched fullers. Struck at the right forte with maker's name, WORK OF SARKAR (?). In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with engraved silver mounts. Mid-19th century. Wear to leather, minor scattered pitting. Overall length 82.5cm. Condition II
