Description
Gottfried and Thekla Zielke (German/Venezuelan, b.1928), Four Mid-Century Art Pottery Objects
Colonia Tovar, Venezuela, circa 1969-1970, ovoid forms with applied mottled blue gray earthen glazes, including two wall hanging sculptures with raised coral form decoration (8 3/4 x 8 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. largest); two table vases with textured surfaces, the largest dated 1969, the smaller dated 1970 (4 1/2 x 8 x 4 1/2 in. largest). All ink inscribed to undersides.
The Zielke's works are a husband and wife collaboration, with Thekla creating the pottery designs, and Gottfried handling glazes, technical aspects of firing, and production. After managing various ceramic and tile factories in Columbia and Venezuela, they would both eventually settle in Colonia Tovar, an isolated mountain village near Caracas, founded in the nineteenth century by Bavarian immigrants.
From the Collection of Mr. Ivan Remnitz, Caracas, Venezuela and Pittsboro, North Carolina
