Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 800 CE. A gorgeous and unique necklace constructed with dozens of petite shell beads, stone beads, and a single copper disc on the midpoint of the strand. Several rectangular Spondylus shell beads are drilled through their bodies for suspension and are interspersed amongst the more petite shell seed beads and stone discs and tubes. A maroon-hued shell spacer panel rests between the necklace strand and a large, yellow-white half shell pendant. Size (necklace): 22" L (55.9 cm); (shell pendant): 1.98" W x 1.91" H (5 cm x 4.9 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas, USA collection, acquired via descent from family in Jalisco, Mexico ca. the 1940s, and imported into the US in the 1970s and 1980s

Wearable as shown and strung in modern times. Shell beads, stone beads, and copper disc are ancient; stringing is modern. Minor nicks and abrasions to some beads, with light pitting on some shell beads, otherwise intact and very good. Great surface smoothness and lovely coloration throughout.
