Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, Nayarit, Colima, and Jalisco, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A nice gathering of 4 hand-built pottery vessels from ancient West Mexico. First is a squat vessel with a carinated shoulder, 3 loop handles, and red pigment forming spirals and lines around the neck. Next is a burnished rectangular vessel with a red upper body adorned with vertical orange rectangles. Third is a low but wide jar with cream and red embellishments across the surfaces. The largest jar is formed from redware and has a spherical body with a thick rim. Size of largest (redware jar): 6.25" Diameter x 5.625" H (15.9 cm x 14.3 cm)
Provenance: private Kansas, USA collection, acquired via descent from family in Jalisco, Mexico ca. the 1940s, and imported into the US in the 1970s and 1980s

Condition
Repair to body of larger striped vessel, and loss to portion of rim of rectangular vessel. Each piece has light abrasions, minor encrustations, and fading to pigment commensurate with age. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
