Description
The Gospel of Isaiah 2:4 draws heavily on a utopic view of the world. The famous “swords to plowshares” quote is but one of its famous proclamations: -- And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. --The prophet raises two very interesting problems. The first is the economic problem of how to convert the capital goods needed for the production of war materiel (“swords”) into the capital goods which are needed to produce consumer goods (“ploughshares”). The second is the moral and political problem of getting the will power and the political constituencies to do so.And its presented here in a 1969 Anti-Vietnam War poster by Wes Wilson for the “New Mobilization West” protest, created to look like a concert poster. The march took place on 15th November 1969, starting at Golden Gate ark and ended at the Polo Grounds in San Francisco. This San Francisco demonstration was overshadowed by the success of a major anti-war protest in Washington on the same day, which attracted an estimated 250,000 war protesters. They staged a peaceful rally demanding a rapid withdrawal of United States troops from Vietnam. President Richard Nixon sat comfortably in the White House and ignored it, reportedly watching college football.
