Description
4 Rare Bronze Oval Intaglio Gems with polished flat backs attributed to the Tassie, Marchant, Brown workshops circa 1800: tentatively identified as: a Profile of a Satyr with Horn inscribed "Marchant," Head of Julius Caesar, the Three Graces, Aglaea, Euphrosyne and Thalia with inscription along bottom edge "kaep", and the full face of a bearded God probably Zeus. Approximate width of largest, the Head of Faun, 1 inches (2.5 cm.). NOTE: James Tassie (1735-1799) was a Scottish gem engraver and modeller, his business was continued well into the 19th century. Besides carved semi precious stones, he produced these in paste glass, plaster, and sealing wax versions; fine casts in finished bronze are labor intensive and extremely rare. The Oxford University maintains a website of their collection of paste gems by Tassie: https://www.beazley.ox.ac.uk/XDB/ASP/browseGemsPlates.asp
