Description
Attributed to John Williamson (1826-1885) Untitled (Mountainous landscape with Indian encampment on a bluff). oil on panel, octagonal format with original frame. Some paint loss and touchup in the lower left. Unsigned, with owner's name inscribed verso. This charming Hudson River School diminutive but detailed landscape is typical of Williamson in showing a rocky bluff at the left overlooking a tranquil body of water with a backdrop of distant mountain peaks. Also seen in his paintings are tiny Indians looking out at the landscape, here with a teepee. The artist was appreciated and known for small gem-like paintings. He also used the oval and here, octagonal, format often. Size: 9.25'' x 8'', 23 x 20 cm (board); 11.75'' x 11'', 30 x 28 cm (frame). Provenance: Private Pennsylvania Collection.
