Banksy (British, b. 1973) Two Di Faced Tenners. Size: 2.75'' x 5.25'', 7 x 13 cm (each sight); 14'' x 13'', 36 x 33 cm (frame). "Di Faced" is a pun on the word 'defaced' and refers to the fact that here Banksy has altered the familiar £10 British note by replacing the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with that of the late Princess Diana. Instead of 'Bank of England', the note reads, 'Banksy of England'. Under the banner, an inscription reads, 'I promise to pay the bearer on demand the ultimate price', a reference to the fate of the late Princess, at the hands of the media. The reverse side of the print remains mainly unchanged except for the motto 'Trust No One' written in the lower-right corner, beneath the portrait of Charles Darwin. Double-framed together in one frame. Banksy is one of the most well-known, if anonymous, street artists working today. Banksy, the pseudonym adopted by the artist, guards his privacy and the details of his life, which remain largely unknown to the public. He initially garnered fame for his graffiti, which combines spray paint and stenciling techniques with commercial, political, and contemporary imagery, infused with ironic social commentary and humor. His work first began appearing on walls in and around Bristol and London's Shoreditch district during the mid-1990s, and he has since gone on to achieve world-wide fame.
