Description
Lord George G. N. Byron Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages on one leaf, 7.5" x 10.25", Cephalonia; September 12, 1823. Addressed to "D. Grant Esq. & Co." in Malta, Byron discusses financial matters relating to the Greek Revolution. He writes, in part: "I have only a moment to acknowledge your obliging letter. I will write more fully by another opportunity – in the mean time I beg you to accept my admirable sentiments for yr early communication...in case you should not further the bills direct on that home...my present credits altogether on Genoa and England amount to about seven thousand pounds...I will let you know a sum as I have settled the sum I mean to draw for in dollars." Signed, "Noel Byron." In the year before his death, Lord Byron was living in Greece, where he was embroiled in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire. He arrived on the island of Cephalonia around mid-August 1823 and utilized it as his base to correspond with a multitude of Greek revolutionary factions. Ultimately, Byron donated tens of thousands of pounds to the Greek cause, including a 4,000-pound donation to refit the Greek fleet. The letter is accompanied by a typed letter signed by Mary A. Benjamin of Walter R. Benjamin Autographs discussing Byron's use of the adopted name "Noel." Condition: 1" closed tear which touches the first letter of the signature. Ten presumed letter-locking slits measuring 1" which do not affect legibility. Light edgewear and soiling. Pencil notations to recto. HID03101062020 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
