"Marvel Feature #1... featured the first appearance of the Defenders. Behind an iconic cover by Neal Adams, writer Roy Thomas and artists Ross Andru and Bill Everett brought readers a new super-team comprised of three characters — Doctor Strange, the Hulk, and the Sub-Mariner — who, even if a reason could be contrived to bring them together, had no real reason to stay together once the immediate crisis had been averted. But despite its obvious origins as a high-concept gimmick, the Defenders' 'non-team' dynamic proved to have a compelling quality all its own; indeed, though one might never guess it from this somewhat ragged initial outing, The Defenders would, in just a few years, grow to become one of Marvel's finest series of the era — even, perhaps, the defining Marvel superhero series of the Seventies." — Alan Stewart, "Attack of the 50 Year Old Comic Books" blog, July 28, 2021.
