Description
NOBUYOSHI ARAKI (*1940) | Untitled, 1991 | Chromogenic print, printed later on Fuji Archive Crystal paper, in perfect condition From the series ‘Colorscapes’ 58 x 46 cm Signed by the artist on the reverse LITERATURE Nobuyoshi Araki, Akt-Tokyo. 1971-1991, Camera Austria: Graz 1992, back cover; Araki by Araki: The Photographer’s Personal Selection, 1963-2002, London 2003, p. 276; Nobuyoshi Araki, Self-Life-Death, London 2005, p. 322; Araki, Cologne 2007, cover and p. 25; Nobuyoshi Araki, Araki. 40th Anniversary, Cologne 2020, p. 33 and cover. From the 1990s onwards, Araki turned increasingly to the single image. He skilfully condensed the formative concepts of his work, such as the duality of Eros and Thanatos, which he had elaborated in his books, into singular shots, such as the iconic motif of the woman with a melon from the “Colorscapes” series. The international art world became aware of his oeuvre, galleries and museums worldwide dedicated solo exhibitions to him. Artist personalities such as Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, Larry Clark or Björk visited him in Tokyo or realised joint projects with him. In 1999, shortly before his sixtieth birthday, his work was finally honoured in his own country with his first one-man show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
