Description
A set of two 1800s matching marble and alabaster obelisks. The items have an off white base with relief profile portrait depictions of famous ancient Greek philosophers, Diogenes and Socrates. Both portraits have names on inscriptions underneath. The main body part is a dark stone pietra dura and has bronze metal hooks. Neo Classical Style items from the mid of the XIX Century. Interior Decor Items. The Grand Tour was the principally 17th to early 19th century custom of a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, undertaken by upper class young European men of sufficient means and rank and typically accompanied by a chaperone, such as a tutor or family member, when they had come of age about 21 years old.
